Griswold, Connecticut, is a small town in New London County, Connecticut. According to the 2020 census, its population was 11,402 people. The town includes the borough of Jewett City and the villages of Doaneville, Kaalmanville, Rixtown, Glasgo, Hopeville, Nathanieltown, Pachaug, and Stratford.

Mark Twain House

The Mark Twain House and Museum are located in Hartford, Connecticut. Samuel Langhorne Clemens lived here from 1874 to 1891. The home was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter and built in the American High Gothic style. It is now a museum dedicated to the life and works of the famous American writer.

In 1891, Mark Twain lectured at Simsbury’s McLean Seminary and visited the Daniel Wadsworth Tower. The town’s history dates back to the 1700s, when Stephen Gates was granted fourteen acres of land to build a mill. The first mill was a corn mill and sawmill located at the Pachaug River. The mill operated for over one hundred years until it burned down in 1881. A few years later, the town lost its mill and church.

The Hopeville Pond offers quiet shores, which were once home to prosperous mills. The pond also has some interesting wildlife. The Mohegan tribe used this area as a fishing spot. The stone walls they built can still be seen during low tide. In 1828, the Quinebaug River was dammed and the area flooded.
